Welcome to our friendly Derby u3a Pickleball group! We welcome everyone, from total beginners to advanced players, to join our competitive mixed doubles games.
We play Pickleball on a badminton court with a lowered net. The game combines features of tennis, table tennis and badminton.
Is Pickleball for me?
You need a basic level of general fitness to play safely and have fun. As with participation in any sport, consult your GP before coming along if you think that’s sensible. The best way to decide if you like it and have sufficient aptitude to enjoy playing the game, is to have a go!
Introductory sessions
Every potential new player has an initial induction. We explain how our Pickleball community works, introduce you to the game and show you how we play it. Most of all we give you chance to have a go, with the support and encouragement of an induction leader.
Inductions are normally held on Mondays at 12:00pm. You need to book your place – please don’t just turn up. Click on the Group Email link above and Sally will contact you to book your induction, provide more information or answer your questions.
Having a go
If you’re not a Derby u3a member yet, you can have 2 trial sessions before deciding if you want to join. Session essentials are you, a pair of trainers and £3 subs per session to cover court fees. Most people wear a tee shirt with joggers/gym leggings/shorts. We lend you a paddle and you’re off!
Joining our mainstream sessions
After the induction, some players are ready to join our regular groups. Most people have a second session with guidance on hitting forehands, backhands, volleys and serving etc. We advise some players to build up their skills and confidence first in our beginner “hitting practice” groups.
With induction complete, your Leader will ask if you’d like to join our regular group(s). You cannot join unless you are a Derby u3a member Click here for joining information. You can join one or all 4 Pickleball groups: 12-1pm Monday and/or Friday; 1-2pm and 2-3pm Wednesdays. When you want to play, you book yourself onto a session by voting in a WhatsApp poll sent out a day or two before. All sessions cost £3. Everything is thoroughly explained at your induction.

You are welcome to visit Springwood Leisure Centre to watch us from the viewing area. Please be aware though that neither leisure centre staff nor pickleball players are able to provide further information.
