Madeira

In September 2025 some Tuesday Trampers embarked on our first international adventure.

Eight of us spent a week enjoying the sunshine and exploring Madeira.
We embarked on three walks along the levadas, which are water channels bringing water from the wetter north to the drier and populous south.

The first levadas were established in the 15th century and are up to 100 kilometres long. They are used to supply drinking water, irrigation and electricity generation.

One of our guides, Phillipe, had a talent for calling the birds is check the following video to see the response when he called the Madeira Firecrest in the middle of the forest.

The levadas had to be cut out of the rock often with a giddy precipice on the other side.

Farther along the lavada. The levadas in Madeira stretch to a total of 3,000 kilometres.
