Tuesday 16th June: This walk showcases the highlights of Buxton, blending architectural heritage with the rugged beauty of the Peak District. We start by strolling through the beautiful Pavillion Gardens up the hill passed the Devonshire Dome, the route climbs north through the dense woodlands of Corbar Hill for elevated views at Corbar Cross before sweeping west toward the fringes of Burbage. The southern loop transitions into Buxton Country Park, passing the entrance to Poole’s Cavern before a steady ascent to the summit of Grin Low. Here, we reach Solomon's Temple, a Victorian landmark offering panoramic vistas. The descent concludes with a gentle walk through the high town and along the The Broad walk and back to the cars. About 7.5 miles with an ascent of 1327 feet.

Tuesday 23rd June: This week we embark on the spectacular and favourite 'On the Edge' walk on the White, Froggatt and Curbar Edges. The walk takes us along White Edge for some fantastic views. We'll stop at the Longshaw Estate where a National Trust cafe offers coffee etc. Lunch will be in the ancient oak and birch wood of the other-wordly Padley Gorge. Unfortunately, there is no pub on the route—not by so fast, an insignificant diversion just after lunch puts the 17th Century Grouse Inn Inn en route! We return along Froggatt Edge and Curbar Edge for more fantastic views. About 8.9 miles and an ascent of 1066 feet.

Tuesday 30th June: Embark on a journey from Barton Turns Marina where tranquil waterways weave through the lush, ever-expanding tapestry of the National Forest. Here, a once-forgotten landscape of gravel pits has blossomed into a vibrant marina, now alive with 300 narrowboats and a destination for shopping, drinking and eating. As we wander, the stately Dunstall Hall emerges with its whispering tales of the visionary Arkwright family, pioneers of the Industrial Revolution. Nearby, the skies hum with purpose above Tatenhill Airfield, home to life-saving Air Ambulance heroes, while the charming village beckons with the warm embrace of the Horseshoe Inn, where a hearty fare awaits we weary travellers. Follow the winding path of the National Forest Way, where dappled sunlight guides us to Branston Water Park. Once a barren pit, it now pulses with dragonflies, songbirds, waterfowl and hidden trails that invite discovery. Let the route lead us full circle back to Barton Turns Marina, where the water’s gentle lap offers the perfect finale to a day of wonder. About 7.8 miles with a ascent of 366 feet.

The above walks may be subject to change.

Support our pubs as they face increasing financial pressures.

Below is a list of pubs/cafés that have allowed walking groups to use their car parks free of charge during walks. This is in return for buying drinks/food at the end of the walk. It saves parking fees and works best on quiet weekdays rather than busy weekends or holidays. We need them and they need us.

We always request permission in advance.

  • Black Lion Inn at Butterton
  • Bluebell Inn at Kings Langley (with food)
  • Chequers Inn at Ticknall
  • The Druid Inn at Birchover
  • Old Dog at Thorpe
  • Royal Oak at Hurdlow
  • Royal Oak at Mayfield
  • Tea Junction café at Hulme End.

We will add to this list. Please tell us if you have used other local pubs and we'll add them.

A photo of some old ruins. The building behind them is Throwley Hall. Next week, we'll upload a photo of some old fossils.

If you want to walk but can't make Tuesdays, the Wednesday Walks group offers similar distance weekly walks. If eight miles is just too much for you, the Wednesday Wanderers is a new group offering slightly shorter distances every other week. The Walks - Short group offers even shorter walks fortnightly on Thursday mornings. What a choice!

Thank you for reading.
