Introduction
Welcome prospective Tuesday Tramper!
We hope you will join us to have some fun, get a little fitter and make some new friends. 'Learn, Laugh, Live' are the watch words of the u3a and we hope these follow through into our walks.
You should find all the information here you need to join us and get yourself ready to walk.
Derby u3a membership
If you are not a Derby u3a member you can walk with us for two 'taster sessions' before you need to join Derby u3a (unless you are a member of a u3a having reciprocal arrangements with Derby). To learn more about joining Derby u3a please click here.
Our walks
We normally walk every Tuesday except when heavy rain is forecast.
Please note, there are no meeting fees for our walks.
We meet at 10.00 am on the day of each walk with the aim of walking at 10.15 am. This gives us time to arrive, locate each other and put on our boots etc. Don't worry if you are running late as we'll wait if we are expecting you. You will need a vehicle to get to the meeting point and we encourage car sharing. We use free car parks or on-road parking wherever possible but we can't always avoid car parks requiring a cash or card payment.
Our walks are in the beautiful Peak District and in the countryside around Derby. We are always looking for new areas to walk in within a reasonable drive. We love walks with great scenery, a mix of terrain and historical or other points of interest.
Our walks are typically between 7-9 miles long. We don't force the pace and will wait for each other. There is a short walks group if that is more suitable for you. We don't seek out hills but there are plenty in the Peak District. There's nothing wrong with stopping to admire the view part way up and coincidentally catching your breath at the same time!
If a walk is described as an 'explorer walk', or is outside the National Park or other well trodden routes, we may not know what we'll find. We could encounter overgrown vegetation, possible dead ends and diversions. Don't worry, we've never been lost!
We encounter cows, horses and other livestock in fields. Livestock and dogs don't always mix so we don't allow pet dogs on our walks.
What you will need
Please wear good walking boots, waterproof and warm clothing and bring everything you need for a late morning break and lunch. We usually stop for a drink/snack at 11.15am and lunch at 1.00pm. The actual times vary and depend on when we reach a target location or just when we find a good spot to sit. A walker's seating mat, or failing that a carrier bag, is useful to sit on. Some members bring treking poles and these can be a good idea especially on some walks.
We often include a pub or cafe stop but these won't necessarily coincide with the above break times. We don't usually have time to stop for a pub lunch. Please bear that in mind when deciding what food and drink to bring.
How we keep in touch
We communicate using a WhatsApp group which can be accessed using a mobile phone or other device. WhatsApp is an easy to use way to exchange information, have your say and build our own little community.
You will need to agree to our social media policy and be a member of our group to join. If you are not a member or can't use WhatsApp you will be informed of our walks via email. It's not the same experience but you will get the essential information. We post walk details a few days in advance of each walk.
Please use WhatsApp private messages and set up specific chat groups for matters that do not affect all members. But, please remember our communications must always be welcoming and inclusive.
All communication channels are intended solely for the purpose of Tuesday Trampers' business. We have zero tolerance for inappropriate communications.
